USC forward Charles Buggs out for final NCAA Tournament game

TULSA, Okla. — Reserve forward Charles Buggs did not play against Baylor because of a left neck strain.
Buggs, a 6-foot-9 senior, took a hard fall in the first half of the Trojans’ 66-65 opening-round victory over SMU on Friday.
For much of this season, the graduate transfer from Minnesota has dealt with a handful of injuries.
Buggs missed several games with a sore left knee, and each week has fluid drained. He also missed USC’s two Pac-12 Tournament games against UCLA and Washington because of a viral illness.
He played four minutes on Friday against SMU, where he made a free throw, grabbed a rebound and picked up one steal.
In 24 games this season, Buggs averaged 2.3 points and 1.8 rebounds in 8.9 minutes per game.
Mike Hopkins, the longtime Syracuse assistant who was hired on Sunday by Washington as its head coach, previously interviewed for the same position at USC in 2013.
Hopkins told that he had multiple conversation with USC officials that year, before Pat Haden, the Trojans’ athletic director, ultimately tabbed Andy Enfield for the post, replacing Kevin O’Neill.
At one point, Hopkins appeared to be the frontrunner until Enfield emerged as a prominent candidate after lead Florida Gulf Coast to the round of 16, the first ever No. 15 seed to advance to a regional semifinal.
Since 2015, Hopkins had been the coach-in-waiting for Jim Boeheim at Syracuse.
Hopkins, a Laguna Hills native who graduated from Mater Dei High, grew up a fan of USC football, also told the newspaper that one of his best friend’s parents were USC boosters and was childhood friends with Todd Marinovich, who played quarterback for the Trojans.
Amanda Enfield, the wife of USC coach Andy Enfield, was born in Mustangs, Okla., and had family at the past two tournament games in Tulsa.
