Ashley Ridge’s Owen Trephan heads All-Lowcountry wrestling team – Charleston Post Courier

With three older brothers who wrestled, young Owen Trephan spent his share of time as a practice dummy.

“He got knocked down, picked on, tickle-tortured,” says his mom, Heather. “But not anymore.”

The youngest Trephan brother has grown into a 6-1, 220-pound sophomore at Ashley Ridge, an imposing defensive end for the Swamp Foxes’ football team and an undefeated state champion in wrestling.

After a 27-0 season in which Trephan led Ashley Ridge to a region championship and the Lower State finals of the Class AAAAA state playoffs, Trephan has been named The Post and Courier’s All-Lowcountry wrestler of the year.

It was a natural progression for Trephan, who made the state finals as a freshman last year. He followed in his brothers’ footsteps on the wrestling mat, taking up the sport in kindergarten when the family lived in Pennsylvania, one of the hotbeds of the sport.

A growth spurt coincided with the family’s move to Summerville when Owen was in eighth grade.

“I remember I got to go to all their matches, and it was fun to watch,” he said. “I wasn’t very good when I was little, but I got better. Now, they don’t mess with me anymore.”

Wrestling workouts are notoriously brutal, but Trephan has stuck with it all these years for a reason.

“I don’t know, there’s just something about wrestling,” he said. “In football, it’s a team game. In wrestling, if you lose, you can blame yourself; it’s your own work ethic that’s at fault.

“If you put in the work, that’s what you get out of it. It’s a commitment.”

Trephan’s commitment already has brought him a national championship. He won the 195-pound weight class of the freshman division at the National High School Coaches Association Wrestling Nationals last year, and will go for a sophomore national title in the coming weeks.
